New Friday the 13th Film Secures Experienced Effects Team, Possibly Settles on Inspiration for Mask Design

Friday the 13th

News regarding the upcoming installment in the Friday the 13th franchise is pouring in on the regular. Today, we have learned (via F13Franchise) that Legacy Effects (World War Z, Godzilla) has been brought on board to orchestrate FX for the project. The outlet is also reporting that the design for Jason’s mask will be based on the version originally introduced Friday the 13th: Part 3.

As we recently reported, the casting process has begun and the film is in preproduction in Conyers, Georgia (which is just east of Atlanta). Although cameras are not expected to roll until mid-March, this is good news and an indication that the film is on track for its October 13, 2017 release date! Several targeted release dates have come and gone thus far.

Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners) penned the most recent draft of the screenplay. And Breck Eisner (The Crazies) is directing.

What we know so far is that it will be a period piece and an origin-ish story. We also know that the film will take place between the late ’70s and early ’80s. We also know that we will likely see Jason’s father popping up.

David Bruckner was previously attached to direct. But Paramount explained that they felt it would be unfair to retain him with all of the setbacks. And he was eventually released from the project.

Nick Antosca (Hannibal) was on board to write the script some time ago. Antosca said that this installment would not be a sequel to the 2009 reboot and would do its own thing. More recently, Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners) took over scripting duties. Prior to Guzikowski or Antosca, a draft of the script was penned by Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg. It was speculated a while back that Jason would not be in the new Friday the 13th film but that allegation has been repeatedly refuted. The rumors that the film would be found footage have also been repeatedly refuted.
