Comic Review: Joe Golem: Occult Detective The Outer Dark #1 Hits The Ground Running

Joe Golem: Occult Detective The Outer Dark #1 takes place two years after the events of Joe Golem and the Drowning City, in which Joe saved the Drowning City from an undead takeover and defeated a child-snatching monster.

Joe Golem Occult Detective The Outer Dark #1 picks up with Joe Golem being approached by police to solve the mystery of a man who attacks citizens with superhuman strength, hears voices in his head, and has the “stars in his eyes.” While trying to aid law enforcement, Golem is also plagued with recurring nightmares that seem too tangible to be fantastical.

Joe Golem: Occult Detective The Outer Dark #1

Overall, Joe Golem: Occult Detective The Outer Dark #1 is an interesting comic that is wrapped in horror, fantasy, and mystery. The blending of these genres can be easily flubbed, but Joe Golem: Occult Detective The Outer Dark #1 does a great job bringing a variety of elements together in order to drive the story.

There is also admirable attention to detail that helps sell how uncertain our world is, and what is presented in front of us is simple illusion. This is expressed in the dull color pallet and the accentuated attention to the shadows of the characters and scenes, rather than what is conventionally highlighted in comics. Highly recommended for anyone who is interested in paranormal type stories or wants to start a mystery comic.
